Machine Sewing Workshop : Make a Cushion Two ways
Tutor: Christine Forsyth
Make Cushion Covers at MOKA
In this class we will make two types of cushion covers – a simple, envelope-style and a zipped cover.
Skill level. As long as you can sew a straight seam on your machine, this class will work for you.
What you need to bring.
Sewing machine, basic kit (scissors, pins, etc).
Thread of a suitable colour for your fabric.
Two square or rectangular cushion pads – any size.
Fabric ready-cut as detailed below.
Fabric.
In order to get through the sewing in the time we have, you will need to come with your fabric cut. It just takes too long if everyone has to cut during the class.
Choose your fabric carefully. You will want to work with a firm, preferably cotton fabric. Choose the kind of fabric you would use for lightweight curtains. Avoid difficult fabrics like velvet, anything silky and slippery, anything that is too heavy or likely to fray badly. Remake in Crieff is a great source of fabric which will not break the bank.
Cutting.
Measure your cushion pads along the edges – they may have a size already marked, in which case, go with this.
If you like your cushions quite firm, use this measurement.
If you like the covers a bit looser, add 4cm to this measurement.
For the envelope style –
Cut ONE piece the size of the pad. This will be the front of the cushion so you might want to select a particular bit of your fabric if it has a pattern.
Cut TWO pieces the same width of the pad, but three quarters of the depth.
For example, if your cushion pad measures 40 x 40 cm, you will have
1 @ 40 x 40
2 @ 40 x 30
Or add 4cm to each measurement if you want a looser-fitting cover.
For the zipped style
Cut TWO pieces as for 1 above.
So for 40×40 cm pad cut TWO at 40 x 40 or add 4 cm as above.
You will also need a nylon zip about 5 cm shorter than your longest side.
Doesn’t matter if it is longer.
MUST be a nylon zip.
